Prevention and Control of Meningococcal Disease

cdcThis report compiles and summarizes all recommendations from CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) regarding prevention and control of meningococcal disease in the United States, specifically the changes in the recommendations published since 2005 (CDC. Prevention and control of meningococcal disease: recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices [ACIP]. MMWR 2005;54[No. RR-7]). As a comprehensive summary of previously published recommendations, this report does not contain any new recommendations; it is intended for use by clinicians as a resource. ACIP recommends routine vaccination with a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) for adolescents aged 11 or 12 years, with a booster dose at age 16 years. ACIP also recommends routine vaccination for persons at increased risk for meningococcal disease (i.e., persons who have persistent complement component deficiencies, persons who have anatomic or functional asplenia, microbiologists who routinely are exposed to isolates of N. meningitidis, military recruits, and persons who travel to or reside in areas in which meningococcal disease is hyperendemic or epidemic). Guidelines for antimicrobial chemoprophylaxis and for evaluation and management of suspected outbreaks of meningococcal disease also are provided.

CDC/NHSN Surveillance Definition of Healthcare-Associated Infection and Criteria for Specific Types of Infections in the Acute Care Setting

cdc
This chapter contains the CDC/NHSN surveillance definition of healthcare-associated infection (HAI) and criteria for all specific types of HAI. Comments and reporting instructions that follow the site-specific criteria provide further explanation and are integral to the correct application of the criteria. This chapter also provides further required criteria for the specific infection types that constitute organ/space surgical site infections (SSI) (e.g., mediastinitis that may follow a coronary artery bypass graft, intra-abdominal abscess after colon surgery).

Health at a Glance Europe 2012

Bandera_UE

Health at a Glance: Europe 2012 presents key indicators of health and health systems in 35 European countries, including the 27 European Union member states, 5 candidate countries and 3 European Free Trade Association countries.

The selection of indicators is based largely on the European Community Health Indicators (ECHI) shortlist, a set of indicators that has been developed to guide the reporting of health statistics in the European Union (ECHIM, 2012). It is complemented by additional indicators on health expenditure and quality of care in the related chapters.

Tdap

The policy change in Tdap, the tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis vaccine, comes on the heels of pertussis outbreaks across the United States. The new recommendation is to vaccinate pregnant women in each and every pregnancy in the third trimester, preferably between 27 and 36 weeks. This includes pregnant women who have been vaccinated previously. Tdap is FDA approved for adults as single use only, so repeat maternal vaccination is an off-label use. Tdap booster is recommended universally for all adults, including those aged 65 years and older.
